When a cow lies down on the ground, it supports 80% of its weight on a tripod – which consists of two knees and a fetlock. Outside, nature provides the cow with a soft cushion of grass. When the cow gets up, the indentations visible in the ground reflect the pressure exerted on its knees and back. A concrete bed in indoor spaces, covered with a thin layer of bedding, creates only a hard surface, often unpleasant to feel. Discomfort on the concrete surface causes stress and limits the time spent lying down, which can affect the cow's milk production.
